Now the spirit is saying explicitly, that in subsequent eras some will be withdrawing from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and the teachings of demons, in the hypocrisy of false expressions.

How can you tell a demonic teaching from a non-demonic one? There’s a simple test that anyone can apply: Look for hypocrisy. This is as objective as it can be. Wherever you find people saying one thing (false expressions) while meaning another thing (hypocrisy)—and disguising the whole mess as righteousness—there are demons and deceiving spirits at work.

It’s that simple. It’s that dependable of a test. It works every time.

I’ll say it again: The hypocrisy of false expressions is what earmarks demonic teachings and deceiving spirits. This is the smoking gun. The best thing about this is that you don’t have to take my word for it, or anybody else’s. See for yourself. Just look for the gun with the smoke coming out. The smoke is hypocrisy. Look for the hypocrisy. Any normal person can see it.

We are living in the era of which Paul prophesied. “Withdrawing from the faith” cannot refer to the world, because the world can’t withdraw from something it never had. These spirits must afflict the visible church—and they do. (It will help to remember that the two elements of the Greek word translated religious are—in English—“dread” and “demon.”)

This is the era of spiritual deception. Maybe you didn’t realize how vast it would be, or how righteous it would appear, or how many people would fall for it. You may never have dreamed that this deception would carry the very name of Christ. I know how incredible all this must seem to you. But which is more incredible: that millions of people claiming to be followers of Jesus are actually unconscious dupes of Satan embarked on an emotional and self-serving tangent that appears to everyone except them to be hypocritical self-righteousness, or that nearly an entire priesthood of holy people who alone knew the Scriptures and exercised themselves daily to recognize the Messiah, killed Him when He came?

I offer the table on the following page, the smoking gun. This table lists just some of the hypocrisies and false expressions that characterize the Christian religion. Tell me if I’m wrong.

This table should be funny because of how true it is. It should be thrilling because of how naked the errors stand before us. But it’s not funny; it’s not thrilling.

It takes a powerful spirit to make a person say one thing and mean another thing. It takes a deceiving spirit to make a person say one thing and mean the opposite thing. It takes otherworldly intelligence (the cream of the demonic spiritual crop) to make the person who says one thing while meaning the opposite thing to not even notice the hypocrisy.
